"Do I really want to spend the rest of my career feeling this way? Is there another way?"
Have you ever asked yourself these questions? And, if so, how much time have you spent truly contemplating the answers? Many of us ask ourselves these questions but rarely give them much time or attention. We simply chalk them up to just being tired, stressed, or selfish. So, as is common and (temporarily) effective, we once again continue to press on- sucking it up, not making changes, tolerating things that we dislike, and accepting less than our dream life.
If this scenario sounds familiar, I can confidently tell you, you are not alone. Plenty of us are extremely good at burying our struggles, avoiding these hard questions, and convincing ourselves that,
"I just need to get through this ________ [ pandemic, season, decade, administrator, until my student loans are paid off, until the kids go to school, until the kids leave the nest, until I retire, until I can afford to go part-time] and then things will be better. "
And, as is also commonplace, we seem to keep coming around to the same internal messaging-
“Suck it up, buttercup." or "You’ve been through worse.” or “Just a little bit longer- you’ll soon have more seniority, money, time, and energy.”
And, because we are good at doing whatever it takes, we knuckle down and get back to work. Perhaps we buy ourselves a few months, weeks, days, or hours of acceptance, or even satisfaction, that “this too shall pass”. We might even carry on with a little skip in our step for awhile. Then, slowly, steadily, and stealthily, those nagging questions begin to bubble up.
“How much longer can I do this this way? Is this as good as it gets? Am I selfish for wanting more?”
And so the cycle continues and nothing ever changes. Except, of course, you get older, a little more cynical, and you begin to chip away at your reserve.
So, what can you do to stop this crazy cycle? Well, I can tell you with certainty that you have the power to stop this cycle right now. The change you desire will begin the minute you choose to think differently. When you make the choice to accept that you CAN have your dream and that there IS a different way, your brain immediately begins to shift and rewire to fire in new ways and you begin to think, feel, and do things differently.
Imagine waking up to your dream life in which you feel engaged, energized, joyful, on purpose, and excited. You deserve this. There IS a better way…YOUR way!
